Most spammers harvest email addresses from the web. Sometimes when you order something your email gets sold to a list, but most times it is harvested from a web site. Spammers have robots that crawl the web looking for anything in the form of an email address, so if you have a web site with your email listed on it or you are published in any kind of directory or listed on a site, your email is sure to get on a mailing list. Unfortunately, not even a spam block web tool is able to get you off these lists.
How Spam Can Harm Your Computer
For your defense, you need a spam block web tool to filter the spam, but you need an antivirus tool as well. Spam emails can be infected, so clicking on them can open your computer up to a virus. It’s estimated that 95% of all viruses are spread through email. Once a virus gets into your computer, it can spread itself by mailing itself out to everyone on your address list.
